MRC Communities: Women in Payments and Fraud: Negotiations Community Call Recap
On 24 October, the Women in Payments and Fraud MRC Community hosted an insightful call with Bruna Fell Lautert, Director of Strategic Partnerships at Walmart. Bruna shared her expertise on the art of negotiation, covering essential strategies and techniques for effective communication and building strong, lasting partnerships. Here are some of the highlights from this valuable session.
Preparation is Key: Bruna emphasized that 90% of successful negotiation is in the prep work. Know your objectives, do your research, and be clear on any alternative outcomes you're comfortable with if things don’t go as planned.
The Power of Human Communication: Face-to-face or video interactions are best for clear communication, as body language plays a huge role (55%) in understanding. Tone also helps but remember that text and email can lead to misunderstandings, especially in global negotiations.
Using Soft Language: Phrases like “we would like” or “we are in the range of” help signal flexibility, making it easier to reach a mutual agreement.
The Power of Asking: When negotiating, know what you're asking for and balance it with the value you bring. This creates a fair exchange where both sides feel they’ve gained something valuable.
Creating Mutual Gains: Successful negotiations strengthen relationships by leaving everyone feeling satisfied and connected. It's not just about winning—it's about building mutual value and long-term partnerships.
