Gig and Sharing Economy Merchants: Success When Expanding Into LATAM

Rodrigo Sánchez Prandi -- dLocal

Presentation

The so-called gig market enables people to make additional money by working a "gig" on the side. In a similar vein, the sharing economy refers to systems in which users can purchase services offered by others, typically through apps. As these marketplaces grow in popularity, it becomes all the more important for the merchants operating these sites to offer payment methods that are convenient for individuals paying for services and for people being paid.

This presentation starts by examining some of the key payments barriers sharing and gig economy merchants typically face when expanding into Latin America. Three recommendations on how to resolve those challenges are shared next, focusing on local payment methods, flexible payment flows, and local partners. The slides conclude with a brief look at the payoffs which are possible when payment preferences are adopted.
