On the 17th June 2020, the UK Supreme Court found the interchange fees set by Visa and Mastercard to be anti-competitive, providing a clear opportunity for the European merchant community to reclaim a potentially significant portion of their interchange fees. Given that interchange fees are fixed, non-negotiable and, in many cases, so large they are a merchant’s third largest cost item - after labour and rent - this was a ground-breaking triumph for the merchant community.
